Jazmine C. Presents Throwback Thursday: Queen Latifah "U.N.I.T.Y"
A real Throw Back Thursday as I bring forward the Queen of Hip Hop, Queen Latifah as she spit real lyrics about women’s social justice on how men disrespect us because of choice of clothes. Now ladies its summer time and Chicago weather can get really hot. Some young ladies like to wear short shorts and miniskirts but it shouldn’t justify men calling women Bitches or hoes. Her lyrics say:
“One day I was walking down the block
I had my cutoff shorts on right cause it was crazy hot
I walked past these dudes when they passed me
One of 'em felt my booty, he was nasty
I turned around red, somebody was catching the wrath
Then the little one said (Yeah me bitch) and laughed
Since he was with his boys he tried to break fly
Huh, I punched him dead in his eye and said "Who you calling a bitch?"
The Grammy Award-winning song by rapper/actress Queen Latifah "U.N.I.T.Y" was a song that spoke volumes. It was released on January 6, 1994 off of her 1993 album Black Reign. The single spoke out against the disrespect of women in society, addressing issues of street harassment, domestic violence, and slurs against women in the hip-hop culture. The song was so powerful that most radio stations didn’t mute any curse words such as “Bitch” or “Hoe’ to make a statement.
