Chicago's Police Superintendent Fired

If there is a word for “beyond ridiculous” and “past insane” that would be the term to describe the streets of Chicago lately. Whether its neighborhood crime or white cops harassing/killing black kids, with seemingly no retribution, something had to be done. So today, the Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, fired the Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. It’s no secret that the city has been plagued with unspeakable gun violence, but the murder of 9 year old Tyshawn Lee in broad daylight and of course, the recent release of the video showing Laquan McDonald being murdered by Chicago cop Jason VanDyke, have the potential to bring the city to its knees. For so long, the Superintendent and the Mayor have sat idly by while each and every day and every weekend, we received a body count of the lives taken on the city’s streets. But to have someone whose job is to “serve and protect” literally walk up to a young man and murder him in cold blood, for all the world to see, is the straw that broke the camel’s back on McCarthy’s time in Chicago. This is simply a gesture, there is much more work to be done. Rahm Emanuel has put a police task force in place and the city now needs to see a significant drop in murders and a conviction of a bad cop in order for this move to be viewed as a step in the right direction.
