Do Hip Hop Fans Know Steely Dan?
Steely Dan fans can sing along to "Peg," "Kid Charlemagne," " Deacon Blues" and "Black Cow," but most of Hip Hop may not know that this 70's rock band from New York has been sampled by some of their favorite artists.
Kanye asked "Did you realize that you you were a Champion in their eyes?" That hook was Steely Dan. Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz repped New York with their hit singing "Uptown Baby, Up town Baby, we gets down baby. Up for the Crown Baby" which was completely Steely Dan's "Black Cow." But before them, De La Soul told us "Eye Know I can love you better"- which is a sample of "Peg." Even Snoop and 213 got in on the action with their single "Keep It Gangsta."
Wiz Khalifa is the latest artist to ask the industry vets for the right to sample. He used the groups hit "Josie" for the background to his "Old Chanel." This is just a sprinkling of their influence on hip hop- proving that two very different genres of music can co-exist on the same track. Good music is good music, no matter who is singing (or rapping).
Here is Kanye's Champion and Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne," the song he sampled for his 2007 version.
