HBO's "Insecure" Creator & Star, Issa Rae
The spunky, hilarious and care free young professional, that is a graduate of Stanford University, now has a TV series that will premiere on HBO. Did I mention that she is BLACK? Issa Rae, the creator of two YouTube web series, "The Awkward Black Girl" and "The Dorm Diaries" made her way to Hollywood to showcase her new TV series. "Insecure" premiered on HBO October 9th at 10:30pm.
On September 27th, Issa Rae, had a screening of her TV series at the Chicago Cultural Center. Over, 150 people attended the “invite only” screening, to get the glimpse of the fresh and positive representation of a black woman.
The show is a HIT! Her colorful language which consists of the four letter word and her unapologetic Blackness will pathe the way for other positive and truthful looks, on a day to day basis, of the “black culture.” Not all black people are rappers, in a gang or any negative images that current TV shows depict of African- American culture. "Insecure" highlighted an educated young black woman that faces challenges in corporate America and also in her personal life. After the screening, the audience had an opportunity to witness the interview with Chaz Ebert and a Q&A. The beautiful Issa Rae, came out in Nike black gym shoes and a delightful dress. By her appearance, I knew she was a care free, strong black woman that is ready to share her story with the world.
Finally, in the year of 2016, black people have positive media images that are relatable and show realness. Not just "Insecure," but "Atlanta", "The Get Down" and "Queen Sugar." There are a few I haven’t named, but I can gladly say that the list is slowly growing.
