Common's "Black America Again" We Will Write Our Own Story
We will write our own story, but first we must know who we are and where we come from. We must be proud of ourselves and our history. Common has once again dropped another powerful, message- filled story to our people. In this one, verse after verse, truth after truth, he tells of how our children have had their childhoods taken from them. Whether it be by way of black on black crime or mass incarceration, dirty water or horrible school systems, it's all a plot. We have had everything that we value stolen from us. They take our name, language and culture and then make laws to further negatively impact us. Common says that the same system that had us on the chopping block, and the same man that had us going through the back door, is the same man that has us living in modern day slavery. Between crooked cops, guns and the dope man, we are endangered in our own neighborhoods. It's time for us to get right and write our own story. We will write how we want it to go and how we want to live and what we want to say. We can not go on living in world where we just live as lab rats of a horrible system's failed "project." Common's album is set to drop on November 4th and includes "Letters to the Free" written for Ava DuVernay's documentary "13th, "Little Chicago Boy" and "The Day Women Took Over."
"Is it a felony or a misdemeanor...Maria Sharapova making more than Serena?"
"We hold these truths to be self-evident. All men and women are created equally, including Black Americans."
