Hate Him Or Love Him: Dave Chappelle's Netflix Special, "Sticks and Stones"
Dave Chappelle is back and is as real and as honest as he was in pretty much all of his stand up shows. The comedic stylings of Dave Chappelle can either make you hate him or love him. In this special, Chappelle touches on, quite frankly every subject a lot of other people are afraid to talk about. Now, depending on one's sense of humor, a lot of things Chappelle mentions is rather hilarious. A lot of other things he mentions isn't as funny and won't sit well with others, depending on who it is that's listening. But Dave said it best himself in a part of his act that aired August 26 on Netflix, “If you’re at home watching this shit on Netflix, remember, bitch, you clicked on my face!” Therefore, if you can't take Chappelle’s brutal honesty and opinionated remarks, don't watch it! Clearly Netflix knew exactly who Dave was and what he was about when they offered him a three deal special for 60 million dollars! Netflix knew his kind of show would bring in the viewers and boost up the ratings. He also has a question and answer segment at the end of the show when he performed live on Broadway.
With “Sticks and Stones”, Dave dives into talking about the LGBTQ community, gun control, rape, suicide, domestic violence, pedophilia, and many other controversial topics. If you've never seen a Dave Chappelle stand-up, then you're in for something unlike you've never seen or heard before. In "Sticks and Stones,"Chappelle says he's what's known on the streets as a "victim blamer." He says he doesn't believe Michael Jackson's rape accusers and if someone told him Chris Brown beat up Rhianna, he'd ask, "well what'd she do?" On the flip side however, he also opens up and shows a more sensitive side on how he feels about the new abortion laws, stating"I don’t care what your religious beliefs are or anything. If you have a dick, you need to shut the f--- up on this one, seriously. This is theirs, the right to choose is their unequivocal right. Not only do I believe they have the right to choose, I believe that they shouldn’t have to consult anybody, except for a physician, about how they exercise that right."
He gives it to you uncut and raw. He also talks about the opioid crisis that’s going on in America. It makes you think, how concerned America is now, since this crisis is affecting America's whites, versus the crack epidemic when it affected America's black community. All of a sudden it’s a health or mental health issue, but when crack was as bad as it was, the black community was looked at as criminals and problematic.
Aside from personal feelings as it pertains to Dave Chappelle, his shows always have “make you think” moments. Some people may think Dave is a comedic genius and others may think he's just a rude, inconsiderate and insensitive, but there's one thing for certain, Dave is as honest as they come and he'll find a way to make you laugh.
