Two Year Anniversary Of The #MeToo Movement And What It Really Means
The #MeToo movement was started by Tarana Burke actually back in 2006, but it didn't gain much attention until going viral in 2017. According to an Essence article, Burke says it was started to help women, particularly black women find ways to heal from sexual violence.
In an interview with Essence, Burke says that she doesn't and didn't organize the #MeToo movement to diminish or bash black men. She started the movement so that black girls and women had a platform to talk about and deal with their sexual abuse. Burke says that, "The #MeToo movement is not anti-black and it's not anti-black men."
Sexual abuse is a huge issue and before the #MeToo movement, a lot of women weren't brave enough to come forward with their stories. Burke opened a door for women who've been sexually abused to walk through, speak out, and be heard.

Hopefully, this movement continues to create change and a safe avenue for women to come forward and deal with the pain and trauma they've endured.
